A declaration of Claudio ABBADO to the Review "MICROMEGA"

Micromega (supplemento to the n°3 of 2002)

Declaration of Claudio Abbado

The government is currently imposing on Italian parliament the speedy approval of measures that shatter the principal of "the same right for all", one of the fundamental rights of human society.
As citizens of Europe we must manifest our indignation at such politics, which not only undermine liberal democracy but also the constitutional state.
That is why we declare our total. solidarity with the "Festival of the Protest Rally" which will take place on September 14th in Rome, Piazza del Popolo (now: Piazza San Giovanni) as well as with all those citizens who independently and enthusiastically are organizing this celebration.
The extremely difficult situation in which liberty and fundamental rights are in in Italy imposes on those who can live their profession as a vocation to commit themselves They must try to avoid that Italy goes astray and slips outside the limits of a liberal democracy.
I would fell guilty of omission towards democracy if I did not speak out now and if I did not, with those means at my disposal, take part in this protest action. I bevieve that it concerns everybody who believes in a civilized world, independent of their political belief.
It must be clear that this is not a question of taking sides, neither for the left, nor for the right, but just to not silently accept that we become accomplice of what is currently happening.
