MAHLER CHAMBER ORCHESTRA

Small story of the MCO

The Mahler Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1997 by claudio abbado and musicians drawn from the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra

The artistic goal of the mahler chamber orchestra is to bring together the best possible players within a rehearsal environment that allows flexibility, extensive analysis of the repertoire reaching from baroque to contemporary music and interpretative experimentation

The mahler chamber orchestra is a free financed orchestra without any state supportits innovative concept however assures the financial basis by working on first class projects and programmatically versatile productions

The orchestra does not have a music director, but works with different conductors and soloists, artists and repertoire are chosen by a board selected from the Mahler Chamber Orchestra's musicians artistically, it has established strong links with Claudio Abbado and with Daniel Harding who became principal guest conductor inc 1998. Since 1999 the orchestra regularly works with Marc Minkowski, with whom it is also planning opera project and tours in the near future

Today, three years after its foundation, the orchestra consists of 50 players at an average age of 27 years who represent over 15 countries across west and east europeit currently meets for 50 to 60 selected concert and festival engagements, tours and opera projects all over the world each year. The cities Ferrara, Landshut, Toblach and Aix-en-provence belong to the residencies of the orchestra and offer regular and favourable rehearsing conditions

Since its foundation the Mahler Chamber Orchestra has started a vital concert activity in Europe and particularly in Italy in 1998 the association "Ferrara musica" (honorary president Claudio Abbado) has established a collaboration with the mahler chamber orchestra offering a residence in Ferrara for the duration of three years, which has recently been prolonged for another two years with two annual concert series,a number of challenging projects in the 1998/1999 season have included collaborations with conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Kurt Masur, Daniel Harding, Leon Fleisher, Iván Fischer and Markus Stenz and soloists such as Anne-Sophie Mutter, Anna Larsson,Murray Perahia, Christian Tetzlaff, Olli Mustonen, Shlomo Mintz and Martha Argerich. Claudio Abbado has also been the initiator of outstanding opera productions in Ferrara: in may/june 1999 the Mahler Chamber Orchestra participated in a production of Verdis "Falstaff" followed by a production of "Cosi fan tutte" with Claudio Abbado in february 2000

After the huge success of the production of "Don Giovanni" directed by Peter Brook for the Aix-en-Provence festival, conducted by Claudio Abbado and DanielHarding in 1998/99, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra became orchestra in residence at Aix-en-Provence, the production has been taken on a world tour and the performances have been received with enthusiasm by international critics and audiences alike among the future projects of the orchestra are other opera projects and concert series with Marc Minkowski and Daniel Harding

In addition to many other engagements during the next season the orchestra will appear at the Festivals of Montreux, Saint Denis, Aix-en-Provence and at the major concert halls of Naples, Milan, Reggio Emilia,Ferrara and Torino with Sir Neville Marriner, Zoltan Kocsis, Daniel Harding and Marc Minkowski
