ABBADO, A CULTURAL
UNIVERSE

LUIGI NONO WOULD BE 80 YEARS

Claudio Abbado is not only an exceptional artist but also a man highly interested in home news, international affairs and cultural diffusion on the whole. We have therefore decided to open a new file dedicated to to the themes Claudio Abbado seeks to defend and to propagate.

This decision coincides with Luigi Nono’s 80th birthday (which he would have celebrated at the end of January). We thus dedicate this first article to him.

Luigi Nono, born in Venice on January 29th 1924, would have been 80 this year. His work, deeply inspired by the transformation and the ideological opposition of the post-war world, is also closely connected to the activity of Claudio Abbado who conducted, amongst others, the world première of “Al gran sole carico d’amore” at the Scala or of “Prometeo, tragedia dell’ascolta” in Venice and at the Scala – Stabilimento Ansaldo – in the wooden construction built ad hoc by Renzo Piano. In the grand Italian tradition Luigi Nono often wrote for the voice and left us big and small forms, which are just so many transformations of human sufferings in the face of oppression.

During the Seventies Abbado and Pollini defended and propagated this music in numerous concerts in North Italian factorie

s and in cycles like Musica Realtà in Reggio Emilia. They continue to this day to stress the importance of Luigi Nono for contemporary music – and that not only in Italy. Maurizio Pollini’s last concert in Ferrara (on 29th January – a triumph) was dedicated to the music of Luigi Nono.

The Luigi Nono Archives in Venice collect all vital documents related to this great composer. We invite all readers not only to have a look at the extremely rich website dedicated to these archives, but also, whenever in this town, to drop in at La Giudecca and visit this place, born thanks to the irreplaceable will of Luigi Nono’s wife, Nuria Schönberg-Nono (Arnold Schönberg’s daughter).
