Wanderer's Chronicle
Two weeks in Italy: May 23rd-June 7th, 2001

The Wanderer, tired but happy, has come home full of emotions, and can finally think back to these last, intense two weeks, from May 23, the date of the dress rehearsal of Simon Boccanegra in Ferrara, to June 7, the date of the last performance in Bolzano, with our party devoted to the youth.
But since the Wanderer is each of us, and we distributed at least 350 tickets (some of them in fact were used by the same persons: some of us have seen all performances ...), we wait for other contributions, written by others, who also feel the need to write down their comments about sensations and facts that are still alive in their memory.

Our member Roberto Rinaldi, the Chairwoman Attilia Giuliani and Milijana, Alessandro and Elena, the youngest "Abbadiani Itineranti"
This time the journal of the "abbadiano itinerante" is intertwined with the beautiful story of Milijana, who came on purpose, and with difficulties, from Bosnia, and with the stories of Alessandro from Palermo and Elena from Perugia, all young students who admire Claudio Abbado's art of interpretation and who had their first opportunity to hear him live.
The party, organized on June 7 in the Bolzano Opera House, was dedicated to them and to all youth who love music and offer their skills to it: the party was entitled 'Music and the Youth'. Our honor guests, together with the three young members of our society, were Evelina, Aline and François (violin, viola, and cello, respectively), three among the best musicians who took the Master course at the Bolzano Academy, created on a project by Claudio Abbado. They plaid for him the minuet from the Divertimento KV 563 by W.A. Mozart: they were emotional and happy.
They were accompanied to the party by the young members of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, also a creature of Claudio Abbado, which, during this tour, has been noted for its beautiful sound and its perfect understanding of and participation to the Maestro?s interpretation. They displayed the same enthusiasm also in their estimation of the refreshments, and ate up all snacks before the buffet could be reached by the members of the CAI, whose average age is much above the average age of the young people of orchestra. But we were still happy, since Claudio Abbado would not have accepted to come to the party without them. As he had promised, Claudio Abbado came about thirty minutes after the end of the performance, walking down the stairs of the theater and smiling, among huge applause, while the three young musicians of the Academy plaid their musical present for him. The Maestro, then, wanted to meet each of them, and also wanted to meet each of the three young CAI members, in particular Milijana, who looked emotional. She wanted to talk to him in Italian, and gave him a book and a CD with sacred music from her country.
We thank Claudio Abbado very much for this: we know this has been the only social occasion to which he agreed to take part lately. But he looks so happy when he is surrounded by young people, that we don't feel guilty for having taken his time.
Still more we want to thank him for his gift of this 'Simone', tragic and sweet, desperate and still relieving, different form the early and memorable 'Simone's' performed at La Scala, and from the more recent one heard in Berlin and Salzburg. Another Wanderer report has already appeared in our web page, after the first two performances in Ferrara, about this edition of Verdi's 'Simon Boccanegra'. He offered another great interpretation at the concert with Cecilia Bartoli, with a Beethoven's second, still different from those heard with the Berliner in Rome and Vienna.
We suggest you to read the beautiful notes by Giordano Montecchi, published in 'l'Unità' of June 7 (to be found in our web page); it is really difficult to say more or better.

Here is some more information about the young people who were our guests at the party:

the three musicians:

Evelina Antcheva, 27 years, Bulgaria -violin
Aline Saniter, 23 years, Germany -viola

Our three young members:
Milijana Pavlovic, is presently in her second year of the course of English language and literature at the university of Banijaluka, she is twenty years old and was born in Mrkonjic-Grad, in Bosnia Erzegovina. She is Serbian. Please read her relation of the trip in Italy

Alessandro Di Gloria, the youngest member of CAI, is 18 years old, studies at the DAMS (Faculty for performing arts) in Palermo, he already publishes music critics on the newspaper 'L'ora' of Palermo. He sent us an interview with Renato Bruson: you can read a small article of this newspaper
Elena Burchia,
25 years old, is in the last year of Social Sciences at the university of Perugia. She ended up being the luckiest one: the day after the performance, she met the Maestro at the airport, and had the opportunity to talk with him (what they said to each other remains a my
